Improve your Podcast listening experience with the i-River AFT-100

Recently I discovered a rather cool little device which I use to help me listen to Podcasts in my car via an mp3 player. I spend at least two hours a day commuting to and from work by car so I try and use this time to listen to a variety of podcasts.

My existing car comes fitted with a front loading CD player. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a line in plug for me to plug my i-river H340 mp3 player into. Until recently I was using a small set of travel speakers to listen to any audio I needed to play from my mp3 player. Not the best thing to use since there isn’t really anywhere to secure the speakers and they normally end up on the passenger seat. Hence, the speakers go flying when I have to brake suddenly.

I’m currently reading Podcasting: Do it yourself Guide by Todd Cochrane which gave me the idea of listening to mp3’s in my car by using an mp3 FM transmitter. Quite simply, the way this works is you plug the transmitter into your mp3 player and then tell the transmitter what bandwidth you would like to listen to your mp3 player on. You then tune in your radio to the same bandwidth specified on the mp3 FM audio transmitter.

Since I’m an i-river fan I decided to buy the i-River AFT-100 Mobile FM Transmitter pictured below

i-River AFT-100

Key features are:

  • Blue LCD display
  • No batteries required
  • Transmits on full FM spectrum (88.1MHz - 107.9MHz)
  • Listen to your mp3 player through your car stereo
  • Works with all portable audio devices

I’ve been using it for a couple of weeks now and have to say that I am really pleased with it. Sound quality is pretty good and it’s nice that the power source uses the cigarette lighter socket rather than batteries.

Live Blogging London Podcast Conference

This is my first live blog. I’m blogging from the UK PodcastCon 2005 conference on my IBM ThinkPad X40 thanks to the free wi-fi setup.

We’ve just had the intros and are now listening to the first presentation. The line up for today is shown in the following pic (click to see full picture):
